Bluetooth Receivers Can Make Practice Time Better!

Bluetooth Receivers Can Make Practice Time Better!

Has your band ever been learning a cover song and you get the dreaded "iPhone held to a microphone" to hear the original?  Not only does the music sound like it's coming from an old AM radio but you will find your bass player asking for frequent replays to try and find the low end that is no where to be found.  So how can you fix this in an easy and cost effective way?  How about using the convenience of Bluetooth with your audio system!  What you need is a Bluetooth receiver which can receive your audio and then be connected to your system!  The Esinkin Bluetooth receiver is inexpensive and works as good as more expensive options from Logitech and others.  It can connect to your mixing console with the supplied 1/8" Stereo to Dual RCA cable ,if your console supports this, or via a Dual RCA to Dual 1/4" adapter cable (linked below)

Bluetooth has limited range so you may need to connect your Bluetooth receiver on stage or closer to your group if you aren't within 30 feet of the receiver.  This is an additional step but adds reliability and more connection options on stage.  An inexpensive way to provide this connection on stage is the Whirlwind podDI direct box.  It is an inexpensive option and adds the ability to connect any other 1/8" or RCA stereo source on stage by providing a balanced XLR output.  The on-box volume knobs allow you to lower the volume for "pop"-less cable changes on stage.

In summary to play your devices audio through your sound system via Bluetooth you will need a Bluetooth receiver, maybe a cable and a direct box that totals around $110.  If your mixing console has RCA inputs and is within 30' you may only need the Bluetooth receiver to wirelessly listen to your music during band practice without it sounding like it is coming from a tin can.  Compare this to some more all-in-one solutions such as the Radial BT - Bluetooth Direct box and you can see our solution above will save you money and provide more connection/control options on stage.  In addition we've found the BT-Pro's range to be very poor primarily due to the receiver being encased in steel.

Please do not misunderstand our stance on Bluetooth use in a pro audio environment.  We are not recommending Bluetooth as a reliable form of audio transmission for performance.  The short range nature and congestion of Bluetooth limits its reliability in an event setting.  In it's current state of development, Bluetooth will never be less expensive, more reliable or better quality than a simple cable connection BUT it is very convenient in non critical applications.  With a push of a button you can connect with your smart phone and have the ability to play your song, YouTube audio or Sound Effects into your sound system while not being tethered to a cable.

MAVM has used Bluetooth receivers in rehearsal environments for over 4 years and we couldn't see working without it.  The singers/musicians enjoy being able to hear direct audio that is inevitably on someones personal electronic device and we no longer need someone to be available just to start, stop, and guess where to go in a song's timeline.  It's 2017 and you shouldn't have to hold a mic to your phone to run a successful practice and this is an affordable way to work smarter!  If you wish to purchase any of these items please support us by purchasing through the links above.

600Mhz Wireless Mic Replacement Recommendations: Better Choice - Shure QLXD w/Beta 87A

600Mhz Wireless Mic Replacement Recommendations: Better Choice - Shure QLXD w/Beta 87A

This is probably my favorite wireless replacement option for your 600Mhz systems. The Shure QLXD series of wireless systems are reliable and rugged. Each of the handheld units are made completed of metal and the metal bodypacks are wonderfully rugged as well. You will notice a major difference in clarity with this digital systems in comparison to any analog system. The lack of companding lets the true tone of the capsule shine through! Some other key features of this system are included rackmount kit, detachable antennas for use with antenna distributions systems and network connectivity to allow for remote management. A simple cat5e connected to your network switch will allow you to manage the system and remotely monitor battery, signal and audio levels from your PC or Mac via Wireless Workbench 6. I chose to show this unit paired with the Beta 87A Condenser capsule because it is one of my favorite capsules for speaking and detailed singers while not being prone to feedback. This system is available with many other Shure capsules and can receive any aftermarket capsule threaded for a Shure handset. Please support us by purchasing through the link below!

600Mhz Wireless Mic Replacement Recommendation: Economy Rack Mount - Shure BLX24R w/B58A

600Mhz Wireless Mic Replacement Recommendation: Economy Rack Mount - Shure BLX24R w/B58A

A good, economical, rack mountable replacement for your 600Mhz equipment is the Shure BLXR series of wireless mics. These are nearly the same as the BLX series but offer some more flexible integration options. They are rack mountable up to two receivers per 1U and have detachable antennas to allow integration with the Shure antenna distributions systems for multiple unit systems. This particular link is paired with Beta 58A capsule. Support us by purchasing through the link below!

600Mhz Wireless Mic Replacement Recommendation: Economy Choice - Shure BLX w/SM58

600Mhz Wireless Mic Replacement Recommendation: Economy Choice - Shure BLX w/SM58

With the sale of 600Mhz there will be many that need to replace their wireless microphone systems. If you are on a tight budget then the Shure BLX series might be right for you. It is the economical choice but it also is a reliable analog unit at an good price. Because of that economy you will not have features like removable antennas, metal handsets or rack mount capabilities, but what you will get is reliable wireless operation with the legendary SM58 capsule or for a little more you can get the new Beta58A capsule. You can get this system with the PG58 capsule but I do not recommend this because in my opinion the loss of audio quality does not justify the cost difference.  If you are replacing an existing system you can send that 600Mhz system to Shure and receive a rebate the purchase of your new system. If you are interested in this item please support us by purchasing through the link below!

T-Mobile is here and 600 Mhz is gone sooner than you think!

T-Mobile is here and 600 Mhz is gone sooner than you think!

Did you know that if your wireless microphones operate in the 600Mhz frequency range that they will need to be replaced due to the FCCs auction of wireless spectrum to TMobile.  Even if you are in the know about this sale the recent development is that they could be occupying the spectrum before the end of the year!  This is quite a bit sooner than the 2020 transition deadline that's been in the news.  That means your wireless mics would be illegal as anything that could cause interference in these bands would be prior to 2020 or you could experience heavy interference once TMobiles sites go live. Here is an article about the date moving up. I'll post some of my wireless mic replacement recommendations soon!
